Pan American Games Buenos Aires, Argentina February 25 March 8, 1951 In the second poster shown here, the artist Berazaluce, has placed three intersecting rings over a graphic depiction of the Southern Cross, the brightest constellation in the skies of the Southern Hemisphere. The cross appears to symbolize the celebration of the Games on the Southern continent. The three interlocking rings symbolize the joining North, Central and South America for the Games. Each ring comprises the flags of each region. (Note that while the colonial flag of Canada is used on the ring representing North America, Canada did not participate in the Games.)
The poster below by Martín depicts an athlete in red jersey and white shorts pole vaulting over the phrase "Primeros Juegos Deportivos Panamericanos" placed at the bottom of the image. The vaulters pole is constructed of the flags of the Pan American countries. Below the image, the words "Achelli & Cia. S.R.L." and "Industria Argentina" indicate the publishers and perhaps the sponsor. |
